Who Are We?

by Arthur G. Schnell –

We all know that we live in a physical body. We also know that we are here on earth only for a certain length of time. How long? That, we don’t know.

God describes our life in the Bible, as a vapour, or a flower, which appears or blooms for a while and then is no more.

We are made in God’s image. We are the crown of His Creation. We may take our life for granted while we go through our busy days, and live as though we are here forever. Our life is a gift from God.

We have a body and a soul. Our body is mortal, but our soul is immortal, eternal. In other words, our body will die, but our soul lives on forever. When our soul leaves our body, we are dead. In John 11:29, we read of Lazarus, a friend of Jesus, who died and was dead and buried in a tomb for 4 days. At this point the Bible says that Lazarus’ dead body was already stinking. God’s Word does not sugar coat life using fancy words, but speaks reality and the truth.

Everybody receives a soul, which can only be satisfied by God. He made us this way. God alone can give us real joy and satisfy us.

What is the Soul?

Doctors and scientists to this day, have not found the soul. Our heart pumps blood through our body day and night, every minute, every hour, every day, month and year. We expect it to do this. But when our soul, which no one can see, leaves our body, then our life on earth is ended. Nobody can bring you back. Your time in this world is over. Then the Bible tells us, that we all must appear before God.

God has promised us Eternal Life, if we, during the time we live in our body, choose to live for Him. Many people live only for the things of this world. They are proud of the things that they have accomplished, and of the things they possess.

Our life can be cut off at any minute. What then?

Yes, we can have eternal life, but we can only get this gift by God’s provided way.

In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: nobody comes to the Father, but by me.”

We have all sinned, but thanks to Jesus, we are all offered God’s gift of forgiveness and eternal life. Many people in this world think they are good enough to earn Heaven on their own merits. They think they do not need Jesus to save them.

No religion, no good works, no outweighing the bad we have done in our lives with our good deeds, can save us. We have all sinned. Heaven is a place of real joy and peace. No sin can enter there. Only God can forgive our sins, but we each need to come to Jesus, the one who gave His life for our sins to be forgiven. Jesus paid for all of the sins we have committed, but we must believe in Jesus, and ask Him to forgive our sins. Then God will make us one of His own children.

God allowed His Son Jesus to be mocked, spit upon, to be beaten, and then to be crucified on a cruel cross for us. Jesus did this for you and for me. He died in our place, for our sins to be forgiven. Jesus did this so that we could have eternal life in Heaven with Him. God allowed all of this for you and me.

Heaven is a place where no sin can enter in, because God is Holy. There will be joy, peace and happiness in Heaven. We were created from the beginning to spend eternal life with God in His Kingdom. It is a wonderful place provided by God for His children. Not everyone gets to go there. Only those who believe in Him and accept Jesus as their Saviour. Don’t miss out of the greatest joy you can ever experience, which can begin even now.

“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT). Then we may live with Him in His Kingdom forever.

By being born again, we receive Jesus into our hearts, and become part of God’s family.

“God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.” (John 3:19 NLT)

Acts 4:12 “There is salvation in no one else! Under all heaven there is no other name (besides Jesus) for people to call upon to save them.”

Only Jesus can save us, and give us eternal life.

In Acts 2:38-39, Peter said, “Each one of you must turn from sin, return to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; then you also shall receive this gift, the Holy Spirit. For Christ promised him to each one of you who has been called by the Lord our God, and to your children and even to those in distant lands!”

The same day that Peter shared the message of Jesus, three thousand people were added to God’s Kingdom. When we are born again, God’s Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we really are God’s children. When we are baptized in the name of Jesus, it’s like His signature is on the bottom of a purchase agreement, showing that the price for our salvation was paid in full by Jesus.

Remember, God loves you! He gave us all the choice of where we will spend eternity.

What would happen, if all at once we would stop breathing? How would it impact our plans for the future, impact our family and our friends? Would life here on earth go on without us? Who are we anyways? If no one can give us our life back, what then? Think about it. The world will go on, and soon we will be forgotten. Life on earth goes on without us.

So, what about you? God, your Creator, lets you decide. Your life is a gift from God.

You could not choose your parents, the colour of your skin, the country in which you were born, or the day when you die. Are you sure that you will be alive tomorrow? Who are you anyways? Where will you spend eternity?

If you have never experienced the real joy of new life in Jesus Christ, you need to come to Him now. God is letting you decide. Make sure you choose right. Don’t wait. Do it now, before it is too late. Believe in Jesus, that He died to save you from your sins, and ask God to forgive your sins. Jesus will save you, and then choose to follow Jesus. You will be ready for your final moment on earth, and will enter into eternity in Heaven with Jesus your Saviour and God your Heavenly Father.
